WELCOME TO SHUKOKAI KARATE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

LETTER FROM SHIHAN GEORGE PURSIAINEN

Oss,

A warm welcome to Finland for the 21st Shukokai Karate World Championships!

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone participating in this event. Together, we are shaping the future of Kimura Shukokai karate and laying the groundwork for future generations.

The KSI World Chief Instructors — Shihan Bressaw, 9th dan, Shihan Daniels, 9th dan (d. 2020), Shihan Marinus, 9th dan, and Shihan Thompson, 9th dan — have done an outstanding job of uniting the followers of Soke Kimura over the past 30 years. A big thank you to them for their dedication. Oss.

I would also like to express my gratitude to Shihan Steve Lunt, 8th dan and Shihan Marcelo Azevedo, 8th dan, for their exceptional collaboration in the Referees’ Council over many decades. Additionally, I want to thank the chief instructors from all countries for their contributions and commitment.

The competitors and referees create the spirit of the competition through their attitudes. Ultimately, what matters more than winning is the future of Kimura Shukokai karate.

That future lives in us.

Liikuntaneuvos George Pursiainen, 8th dan, Shihan
Chief Instructor of Shukokai Karate Federation Finland

KSI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2025

21ST WORLD TOURNAMENT – KSI 30TH ANNIVERSARY

The Shukokai Karate World Championships will be held in Järvenpää, Finland, in June 2025. This exciting event is expected to attract hundreds of Shukokai Karate enthusiasts from around the world.

Hosted by Shukokai Karate Federation Finland, the championships will feature competitors vying for titles in kata and kumite across junior, youth, senior, and veteran categories. Participants will come from numerous countries.

Since 1981, the world championships have been held biannually in various locations globally. The most recent tournament took place in South Africa in 2023. This will be the third time Finland has hosted the world tournament, having previously organized it in Lappeenranta in 1989 and again in Järvenpää in 2006.

The 2025 championships are anticipated to be a significant event for both the public and the sporting community in the region. Organizing such a large-scale event requires extensive volunteer efforts; around 100 Finnish karatekas will be involved in the preparatory work, while approximately 50 people will participate in the actual competition organization.

The world championships will provide the public with an opportunity to witness top international matches. Beyond the competition, the event is a community experience, bringing together Kimura Shukokai enthusiasts from around the globe.

Kimura Shukokai Karate is a traditional style developed by Soke Shigeru Kimura (d. 1995). His legacy continues through the World Chief Instructors: Shihan Bill Bressaw, 9th dan, USA, Shihan Lionel Marinus, 9th dan, South Africa, and Shihan Chris Thompson, 9th dan, South Africa.
